What is TPO?

TPO roofing is commonly used in commercial and residential applications, especially for flat or low-slope roofs. What are the three types of roofing coatings?

Acrylic roofing coatings are popular for their balance of performance and cost-effectiveness. These water-based coatings are easy to apply and come in a range of colors, providing a reflective surface that can significantly reduce roof temperatures and, consequently, cooling costs. Acrylic coatings are highly durable and flexible, making them suitable for a variety of weather conditions. However, they can degrade faster under standing water, so they’re best suited for sloped roofs where water ponding is minimal. Silicone roofing coatings are known for their excellent water resistance and durability. They form a seamless, monolithic barrier that can withstand prolonged exposure to water, making them ideal for flat or low-slope roofs where water ponding is common. Silicone coatings also resist UV radiation well, maintaining their reflective properties and elasticity over time. However, they can be more expensive than acrylics and, due to their slick surface, may require re-coating to maintain traction in high foot traffic areas. Urethane roofing coatings offer outstanding performance in terms of impact and abrasion resistance. They are particularly suited for roofs that experience high levels of foot traffic or are subject to extreme weather conditions. Urethane coatings come in two types: aromatic and aliphatic. Aromatic urethane is highly durable but can yellow under UV exposure, while aliphatic urethane retains its color and gloss but at a higher cost.
